- Meh: 2/5 <a href=http://www.40kbooks.com/>40K</a> is a new company based in Italy publishing e-books in English, some originally written in English and some in translation. So far they've only published short-form fiction in the form of novellas. I tried three of them out - <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0047T7OWM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=dasfrpr-21&linkCode=as2&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B0047T7OWM">Wikiworld</a>, by Paul di Filippo, <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B006N9WG40/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=dasfrpr-21&linkCode=as2&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B006N9WG40">The Wooden Baby</a>, by Graham Edwards, and <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005QSTIL8/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=dasfrpr-21&linkCode=as2&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B005QSTIL8">If By Reason of Strength</a> by Jamie Rubin.<p>They cost £2.49 each on the Kindle, and cost is the problem. All three were decent shorts, but they're too expensive. At no more than a quarter of the length of a typical novel, they are a lot more than a quarter of the price, making them poor value for money by comparison. Things look even worse when you compare the price to that of a magazine like <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000N8V3EQ/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=dasfrpr-21&linkCode=as2&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B000N8V3EQ">Analog</a> or <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004HO5TCO/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=dasfrpr-21&linkCode=as2&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B004HO5TCO">Lightspeed</a>, both of which come out monthly for £1.99 and typically contain one or two novellas plus several shorter stories as well as factual articles and book reviews.<p>At half their current price, I'd take the time to actually review the stories properly and probably give them quite high marks. At their current price, I won't bother buying any more of them. 2012-03-25T15:49:09Z
