Whining northerners

Is it any surprise that southerners generally hold much of the north in disdain? The people who live there seem to delight in building their homes on flood plains, not bothering to buy insurance, and then relying on government hand-outs (ie, southerners' money) to bail them out.

The moment the floods started last month in the north, there they were whinging to the press about how they had no insurance and that I should foot the bill. Compare with this weekend's flooding in the south, where people seem to have put up, shut up, and got on with clearing up.

This clear difference in culture makes a persuasive argument for English regional devolution and not just the answering of the West Lothian Question but also of the Why Does The South Subsidise The North question.

I think this is quite right too but, I suspect through fear of controversy, you have not taken this idea to full term.

We need not merely devolution but a wall to divide us. And with modern technology it could be made to work: just as the Glastonbury fence keeps the scousers out of the festival so could the New Wall keep the northerners out of God's counties. For I would not merely use it to keep out the northerners but anyone not in these blessed Home Counties.

We would not merely be helping ourselves but them also. End this dependency culture and teach them to stand alone.

We should call the wall Cantrell's Wall.

The Guardian's report says things like "Some of the heaviest rainfall in living memory deluged southern Britain yesterday" and "London saw its luck run out after having avoided the worst of the recent downpours" and even "The wettest part of the UK was Brize Norton in Oxfordshire". What was that about Northerners?

Umm, it was that they're a bunch of whinging scroungers, unlike those unfortunate people in the south who also got flooded.

I saw plenty of whinging on the incredibly extensive (much more so than for the northern floods, incidentally but not surprisingly) media coverage. Perhaps we saw different feeds.

I would encourage the building of your wall. We'll run pipelines over it to sell you fresh water.

Southerners hold northerners in disdain? You have to know where people are before you can hold them in disdain. Londoners (despite the fact that most aren't even from London) know next to nothing about life outside of their dirty, over rated rat trap.

"East Angular, I fort that wuz abwoad samwhere".
